The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) has reported that HBO is considering an expansion of its the over-the-top (OTT) strategy that it kicked off in the Nordics in 2012. Japan, Turkey and other markets that have good broadband levels and few HBO-pay-TV partnerships are on the table. There is reportedly no timeline for how soon the expansion would roll out, however.
This is really exciting news for Turkish TV market as HBO is one of greatest players in global OTT market. Its entrance to Turkish market may reshape the industry. On the other hand, things won’t be easy for HBO. This is a totally different market with its own dynamics. There are quite powerful local players and competition is already fierce.
In any case, it is certain that HBO’s global know-how and expertise will enable the industry to move forward.
